There are two Asian American interest sororities – Alpha Kappa Delta Phi and Kappa Phi Lambda –, and one Asian American interest fraternity – Lambda Phi Epsilon. The northwestern part of the campus (home to Hamburg Hall, Newell-Simon Hall, Smith Hall, and Gates Hillman Complex) was acquired from the United States Bureau of Mines in the 1980s. Carnegie Mellon's 157.2 acre (63 ha) main campus is five miles (8 km) from downtown Pittsburgh, between Schenley Park and the neighborhoods of Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and Oakland.[5] Carnegie Mellon is bordered to the west by the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Carnegie Mellon owns 81 buildings in the Oakland and Squirrel Hill neighborhoods of Pittsburgh.

In a competitive global marketplace, businesses and institutions are embracing the value of design, and the demand for professionals in the field has never been greater. Here at the School of Design, we offer a Bachelor's of Design (BDes), a BXA and a Minor in Design. School of Design graduates enter the field with the technical and collaborative skills and perspectives to confront real problems, recognize opportunities, and create innovative propositions and solutions that have impact and purpose in the world. Whether working with worldwide corporate sponsors, local non-profits, or peers in the classroom, you’ll engage in projects that have the potential to yield positive outcomes for society.

Every two years, the organizations vote on a cause to support and raise money through ticket sales, ad sales, corporate sponsorships and donations. Each organization performs a 13-minute-long original show or a rendition of a popular show. In spring 2010, Greek Sing raised over $42,000 for St. Jude Children's Research.

At the end of their first year, students are given the opportunity to begin to focus their interests in two of three design areas (products/communications/environments) and will eventually decide upon a single area of focus or a dual path of study. For non-majors, minoring in design is a great way to diversify your studies and incorporate design skills and thinking into your overall academic experiences. The School of Design is composed of faculty, students, and staff who chose to relocate to Pittsburgh from around the world to live, work, and learn. We appreciate and welcome the diverse cultural practices that members infuse into our community. Not only does this diversity deepen everyone’s understanding of the world, but it also strengthens us as designers. The MA program helps students with non-design backgrounds to expand their understanding of the field through an education in the fundamentals of design.

During Cohon's presidency, Carnegie Mellon continued its trajectory of innovation and growth. His strategic plan aimed to leverage the university's strengths to benefit society in the areas of biotechnology and life sciences, information and security technology, environmental science and practices, the fine arts and humanities, and business and public policy. In 2006, following negotiations between President Cohon and South Australian Premier Mike Rann, CMU opened a campus of the Heinz College in the historic Torrens Building in Adelaide, Australia. President Cohon's term ended on June 30, 2013, after which he returned to the faculty at Carnegie Mellon.

Engineering Design Innovation and Entrepreneurship (EDIE)

Graduates of our programs work as designers, researchers, educators, and entrepreneurs across a vast range of industries in multinational tech, service, and manufacturing companies and design firms; nonprofits, government, healthcare; their own ventures; and colleges and universities. These options in CSS Grid allow you to create something much more dynamic and flexible in interesting ways. You can create two stages of flexibility, because the fr-unit sized columns grow and shrink in a separate stage from the minmax()-sized columns. The max-content and min-content values let you size the columns based on the content size, rather than sizing the content based on the column size. The fr units can easily be used to create compound or asymmetrical grids, where the columns are different sizes. It’s quite possible that because this layout has required JavaScript, anything more creative or complex has been too hard to pull off — and we’ve been left with an expectation that masonry layout should only ever be a simple pattern with uniformly-sized columns.

Technologists in the studio, artists in the lab.

It is one of the ways designers work through their ideas and effectively share their thinking with others. Through guided exercises, students are introduced to ways in which they can make their drawings a stronger communication tool, as well as a useful part of the problem-solving process. Studio courses allow students to experience the iterative process designers use when developing their best solutions. Teachers guide students through the problem-solving process, introducing basic tools (i.e., sketching, diagramming, prototyping) along the way. We welcome students from every discipline to the unique learning environment that exists at Carnegie Mellon. The MAAD program makes extensive use of the Design Fabrication Laboratory (dFAB) in the School of Architecture.

Coursework combines theory and practice and frequently focuses on social, technological, economic, environmental, and political concerns that exist in areas such as healthcare, education, transportation, and business. These key factors shape our school and inform the thinking, methods, and responsible practice of designers who graduate from the School of Design. Our PhD in Transition Design prepares future design leaders to envision and help design purposeful change in the world across a range of complex systems, from natural resources and policy to culture, economies, cities, and social movements. In addition to offering a self-funded route, we offer a small number of teaching fellowships to qualified applicants. The School of Design programs and curricula, as well as the research and practice expertise of our faculty, are not only foundational to the essential traditions of design but also responsive to existing and anticipated changes in the discipline.

Most of the products and communications we interact with are situated within complex physical spaces (our homes, classrooms, places of business, shopping malls, even amusement parks). We also interact with complex online environments such as large websites, social networking and virtual reality environments. And increasingly we interact in ‘smart’ physical spaces with multi-modal communications in a combination of the analog and the digital.

The university is also featured prominently in the films Smart People, Monkey Shines, and in the anime Summer Wars. While personal laptops are highly recommended, and most students find it is convenient to have their own laptops, it is not required. Work created in this program may be excellent material to package for a student portfolio. At the conclusion of the program, faculty will be available to provide feedback on portfolios. Design Research & Problem-Solving Methods will serve as an introduction to the way designers gather meaningful data and to the tools required to apply that data to their design solutions. IDeATe students at Carnegie Mellon are best able to articulate why this experience is important to them.

You’ll build a portfolio and gain skills in areas like interactive narrative, visual and audio asset creation, programming, interface design and user testing. Carnegie Mellon is at the forefront of both the arts and technology — so naturally, we have programs that unite them in unexpected and unprecedented ways. Through our Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology minors — or IDeATe, for short — you can supplement your major with a unique combination of disciplines, so you can build expertise in an emerging field that’s all kinds of cool. Studio courses and faculty research frequently include industry and research projects—which means you’ll have exciting opportunities to interact with and present to professional designers, or even work as a research assistant. Students may enroll for no more than 18 units of independent study courses, and no more than one independent study per semester.

Working with experts from many different disciplines, you’ll create experimental music, delve into technology-enabled applications and explore new markets for sound design, music creation and performance. In the senior year, students work to identify their next steps in professional practice, entrepreneurship, or in academia. They apply their design skills and knowledge to client-based and/or self-defined projects that focus on the design of services or social innovation. Students learn to design for complex environments that exist in the digital, physical and multi-modal realms.

Basically it’s the pattern seen in the following image — where content packs together like a brick or stone wall. It’s also frequently called “waterfall layout”, as a metaphor for how content flows down the page like a waterfall. “We started looking for opportunities to work together,” said Weschler, “but nothing stuck until Rick came to us with ‘Water for Elephants’...” The rest, as they say, is history.

The university also runs Carnegie Mellon Pre-College, a six-week residential program for rising juniors and seniors in high school and the Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS), a free-of-charge STEM immersion program for students from underrepresented backgrounds. The Cyert Center for Early Education is a child care center for Carnegie Mellon faculty and staff, as well as an observational setting for students in child development courses. Carnegie Mellon also developed the Open Learning Initiative which provides free courses online in a variety of fields to students globally. On April 15, 1997, Jared L. Cohon, former dean of the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, was elected president by Carnegie Mellon's board of trustees.

We’re an online magazine dedicated to covering the best in international product design. Currently, the price of producing CO2-SIUCOM concrete is about three times higher than usual concrete in Japan. Hence, work is being done to bring down the price, and Kajima Corporation believes that the concrete will become more economical in the future. Meanwhile, masonry is the value that is currently implemented in Safari Technology Preview, since that’s what the Editor’s Draft currently uses. And so that’s what we used in our demos above, and what you should use in yours.

Undergraduate Degrees

By contrast, a modular grid is a grid where everything is lined up in both columns and rows. They became popular in the 20th century during the dominance of modernism in graphic design. CSS Grid Level 1 is really good at making modular grids… that’s what it wants to do.

In just a few lines of layout code, we are using the full power of CSS Grid Levels 1, 2, and 3 to create flexible columns that change in number to accommodate the available size — without using any media queries or container queries. If masonry is its own display type, and not part of CSS Grid, it will not get the benefit of subgrid. We could make the first and last column fixed-sized, while the middle columns are flexible, changing in both size and number. Now let’s dive into the advantages of combining the full power of CSS Grid with masonry/waterfall packing. In four lines of CSS, with zero media queries or container queries, we’ve created a flexible layout that works on screens of all sizes. And there’s no need to crop content to force everything into same-sized boxes.

The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) is another unit of the School of Computer Science and is famous for being one of the leading research centers in the area of language technologies. The primary research focus of the institute is on machine translation, speech recognition, speech synthesis, information retrieval, parsing and information extraction.[108] Until 1996, the institute existed as the Center for Machine Translation that was established in 1986. From 1996 onwards, it started awarding graduate degrees and the name was changed to Language Technologies Institute.

The Heinz College, the Institute for Politics and Strategy, and the Department of Engineering and Public Policy host centers in Washington, D.C. As part of degree programs, research, and government affairs initiatives as well as being a part of the University of California, Washington Center. Carnegie Mellon also established the Integrative Media Program at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn, New York. Carnegie Mellon also maintains the Carnegie Mellon Los Angeles Center in North Hollywood, California where students in the Master of Entertainment Industry Management program are required to relocate to Los Angeles in their second year and attend classes at this facility. Modeled after the first-year college experience, sessions will consist of studio learning, lectures, critiques, field trips to museums, workspaces, and community spaces, as well as guided work sessions with faculty. Students will be assigned their own personal studio space, providing them with their first foray into “studio life.” By the end of the program, participants will have portfolio pieces that have been critiqued by School of Design faculty.

Researchers in new fields like robotics and software engineering helped the university to build its reputation. One example was the introduction of the "Andrew" computing network in the mid-1980s. This project linking all computers and workstations on campus set the standard for educational computing and established Carnegie Mellon as a technology leader in education and research. On April 24, 1985, cmu.edu, Carnegie Mellon's Internet domain, became one of the first six .edu domain names. These areas merge technology and creativity and provide learning opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The ASO studios within the School of Architecture are comprised of students across studio programs, allowing students to forge relationships with students in other programs.

Our graduate programs are grounded in the belief that both human connection and individuality matter. Each cohort comprises approximately a dozen students for a total of less than 50 master’s students in the School of Design each academic year, enabling all faculty, students, and staff to get to know each other well. We form strong professional relationships and support each other as we carve our unique design paths. We also pride ourselves on our kind, caring, and compassionate community, and aspire to model a healthy work/life balance.

Each program’s focus is unique, but any of them will give you the creative, technical, academic and practical skills you need to innovate across disciplines in ways that are all your own. Our programs attract students from all over the world who want to develop their innate creative talents, conduct research, and launch or advance their design careers. This rich and diverse learning environment enables them to learn from each other and build strong professional networks and social connections. Organizations are actively seeking new problem-solving approaches that respond to escalating business, social, and environmental challenges. Design has become a highly interactive, collaborative and transdisciplinary activity that is integral to the success of businesses and institutions worldwide. Our practice plays an increasingly important role in shaping the interactions people have with products, services and systems that can have substantial impact on their experience.

Introducing Lemon, CMU's Student-Led Arts Publication

We recognize that it is important for the field of design to evolve in alignment with the needs of society and technological advancements. Therefore, we continually strive to develop and integrate the study of emerging tools and practices into our graduate curricula. Several of our courses explore user-experience, user-interface, augmented reality, virtual reality, extended reality, embodied interfaces, and conversational design as a means of developing forward-thinking design concepts.

Courses required in the first year of the MDes program, except for Thesis Prep, comprise the curriculum. The MPS offers students a practical and attainable means of developing a strong, forward-thinking design practice. As you examine spaces meant for daily activities, venues for arts performances and many others, you’ll learn what it takes to create environments that support efficiency and high-quality experiences. Every year, the School of Design aims to enroll 40 students in the School of Design Undergraduate programs, which include a Bachelor of Design, a Minor in Design, and a specialized BXA Design degree. This diverse array of programs ensures that we cater to various interests and career goals within the design field. Please note that only a very small number of those 40 students are enrolled as BXA Design students.

Others are questioning whether or not this kind of layout is needed on the web at all — they aren’t sure that well-known websites will use it. The group graduated together in 2011 and has been creating their unique brand of musical storytelling ever since. Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Island Princess ship was paused for 2+ years (March 2020 thru April 2022). "World Cruise 2022" (112-day roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale/Port Everglades, Florida USA) was canceled. Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau. The 2003-built Island Princess cruise ship is the second of the two Coral-class Princess ships, together with Coral Princess.

Our Mediterranean cruise attracted a good mix of ages, with the bulk of passengers hailing from the United States, followed by Brits and a healthy smattering of Australians. Other nationalities -- including Chinese, Japanese, Canadians and Italians -- made up the balance. Depending on itinerary, however, it would be fair to say that the majority of Island Princess passengers are American. Despite the refit, the ship still feels a little dated, especially in the corridors (which can be uneven in places) and cabin bathrooms. An extraordinary treat for both gastronomes and gourmet novices. The Chef’s Table is a perfect culinary journey for any special occasion.

The voyage can be booked as a roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale Florida (departing on January 5th) or a roundtrip from Los Angeles California (departing on January 20th). The Voice of the Ocean, exclusive to Princess Cruises, brings the excitement and spectacle of TV’s most popular singing competition to the high seas, live and on-stage. The 2200-passenger ship Island Princess and Coral Princess are "aberrations" for Princess Cruises. The line launched only two cruise vessels of this size before joining the rest of the industry in building ever-more-massive ships (like those in the Grand-class). Not part of either the group of biggest-in-fleet ships or the mid-sized Sun-class vessels, Island Princess falls somewhere in the middle and in many ways, it represents the best of both. Island Princess mixes the exotic (international crew members, stylish Italian dining venues, celebrity-style spa treatments) and the familiar (cruising's ubiquitous buffets, poolside umbrella drinks, cocktails and bingo).
