ART AND DESIGN AREAS
Graduates of the program will have the skills and experience needed to create designs for books, magazines, apps, websites, posters, advertisements, games, logos, film titles, and many other media. Both programs require a thesis, Graduate Studio, Graduate Seminar, Professional Leadership, and Graduate Portfolio courses. Graduate options include an MFA in Design that focuses on Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and Interaction Design. The School of Graphic Design at Academy of Art University has five paths to study Graphic Design. All programs explore problem-solving, branding, experience design, print, packaging, communication design, innovation, editorial design, typography, user experience, environmental design, and motion graphics. The school says that the Communication Design Program is “one of the largest public programs in the country.” BFA students have three areas of professional study to choose from including Graphic Design, Art Direction, and Interactive Media.

AAU’s course takes the student through a thorough skill-development process through a wide variety of design applications like typography, packaging, branding, print and user experience etc. The design faculty is made up of nationally recognised professionals who uphold the academy values of ‘support through collaboration’ and ‘personal and professional integrity’. Despite being one of the top graphic design colleges in California, admissions are less competitive than other schools with a ‘no barrier’ motto. Part of the School of Art and Architecture, students can expect to receive a design education that encompasses a global perspective and a multidisciplinary digital focus.
USC also aims to create well rounded designers, so all students on the Design BFA have to complete modles in a complementary field such as business, marketing or advertising. Though the course at USC isn’t as graphic design focused as others, its cohesiveness makes USC one of the best graphic design colleges in Los Angeles. The school opened its doors in 1883 with one building, eight professors, one proctor, and 221 students.
